Welcome to Western Abalone Processors - Port Lincoln, South Australia

Abalone are spiral univalve molluscs which is a type of snail, however they are clearly distinguished from related snails by the row of holes that start small and spiral out from the apex to become much larger and run near the edge of the shell.
Different species of abalone differ by the colour of their shell. For example, the outside of the shell of the greenlip abalone (Haliotis Laevigata) is pale and chalky in colour while the outside of the shell of the blacklip abalone (Haliotis Ruber) is usually reddish brown.
The inside of the shell is a lovely mother-of-pearl material. Depending on the species of the abalone, the mother-of-pearl has decorative value.

The foot of the abalone is also a distinguishing point as it varies in colour, being either green, black or brown in colour. The main functions of the foot however are to hang on to surfaces or to move around.
